The post pandemic surreal society…
Do I need my mask or not? I don’t know anymore? I have one handy, just in case as I tentatively approach the supermarket. No one cares anymore, some do, some don’t. It’s incredible to imagine the toilet roll wars in Isle 6 any more, and I casually wonder if there are still people sitting on a stock pile of tissue.
Society has gone from Stay at home and Save lives to sold out live performances and I’m personally left wondering what the hell has actually happened over the last couple of years, what is really going on under the surface?
Are there still people out there who have not yet left their homes in absolute fear of their lives? That still have home deliveries and remain hugging their TV for safety, afraid of stepping out of their front door.
Personally I feel unaffected by the whole situation, I hardly know anyone who was ill. (maybe 6 people) I definitely do not know anyone who died. I have been working for the majority of the time (apart from the first four months when the college was closed) I refuse to watch or listen to the news and just carried on with my life in a scaled down version of activities.
Perhaps I have simply missed the whole plague? Though I have noticed a few side effects from my own personal solitude. I hate anyone coming into my home, I can no longer stand hugs and I am now the proud owner of way too much craft supplies!
As I start back upon my life without restrictions one thing I have done which feels radical, yet also so satisfying was to delete the Amazon shopping app from my phone. I still have an account, but its not so easily accessible. I acknowledged that I have to make a significant change to this area in my life and made positive changes towards a resolution.
As things return to normal without restrictions I am left feeling grateful for normal and a little suspicious of what really happened?
As pandemics go, meh. I think it needed (needs?) an R0 of 20 or so with a kill rate of 5% for everyone to have taken it seriously. Oh, we took it seriously. But there are 100M folks in this country who don’t/didn’t and it’s just not killing them off fast enough. Science: it’s not optional.
